Last week, Portuguese guitarist Andre Matos has gathered with his fellow countryman Andre Carvalho and American Billy Mintz, bassist and drummer, respectively, for a relaxed session at Cornelia Street Cafe in Manhattan.
Making an inventive use of his effects pedals, Matos initially took his trio into an electronic-drenched mood filled with loops and gorgeous sounds. Besides a few originals, the band tackled Paul Motian’s “Abacus” and Carlos Paredes’ “Sede”, but the peak of the game arrived with “Calma”. The levels remained high on Mintz’s magnetic blues “Cannonball” and there was still time for an animated encore with Pixinguinha’s Brazilian choro “Vou Vivendo”.
